#redhousehoney What’s the big buzz about Red House Honey’s two exciting new honey lines? RAW and FARM both promise the same deliciously all-natural, high standards you’ve come to know and love from the Red House. Just now there’s more to love…
RHH’s FARM/Select Apiaries and RAW/Kosher lines
Red House Honey RAW is also certified kosher by Ottawa Vaad Hakashrut of the Jewish Federation of Ottawa. This all-natural honey is lovingly hand-produced at our St. Lawrence River apiary to exacting standards, and inspected annually by OVH. But we just can’t keep up with demand, and there’s only so much we can produce in this way.

So we created the FARM label, which is our SELECT APIARIES label. FARM uses honey produced at select Eastern Ontario apiaries which take the same loving care of their bees as we do, and which are just as dedicated to bringing you the very finest honey available.
And that’s a big deal to us. That’s what keeps us buzzing.

#redhousehoney. RHH went cross-border shopping and stepped into an Amish time capsule. Crossing the Prescott-Ogdensburg bridge, RHH drove about 30 kms and suddenly, was in another world.
Amish of New York State: working the fields on a cold winter day
Many Amish families live around Ogdensburg and Heuvelton, NY, preserving their ancient way of life without electricity, cars, running water or telephones in the dead of winter. Families make most things themselves, selling exquisite handmade baskets, fresh baked bread, incredible wood products such as chairs, chests, even sleighs, quilts and baking. Eggs and other produce are sold at the farm gate. Even beehives, RHH’s chief interest, can be purchased. RHH tracked down Rudy, the Amish beekeeper at his worship near Renssalaer Falls. Surrounded by his young children, Rudy wore the typical wide-brimmed hat, black jacket and bushy beard proscribed for Amish men. His children and wife wore navy blue jackets, headscarves and black boots. Rudy’s workshop was warmed by a wood stove and he welcomed visitors. Outside, other family members skidded logs with a team of workhorses. Rudy quickly assessed RHH’s beehive needs, added up the numbers (in pencil) and promised delivery in two months. He would write when all was ready.
The Amish leave no carbon footprint. Their lives are simple yet harsh due to their fervently held beliefs. But RHH was welcomed at every house where we called; the farmers were in no hurry and were happy to talk, even if it was just to give directions.
Amish Farmhouse, New York State. Winter
RHH left well satisfied. As we drove home, we waved to the women driving horses hitched to old-fashioned black buggies which provided little shelter from the driving wind and snow. We’ll be back to see Rudy in the spring, when doubtless the Amish fields will be in bloom and newborn animals will be cavorting in the fields. RHH is keen to see Rudy’s bee hives, and taste some Amish honey.
