Bees a-buzzin’, gardens a-bloomin’: it’s groovy in the Red House Honey gardens!

Summer may still be an idea around the St. Lawrence River, but in spite of all the rain and lack of sun, our gardens and our bees are flourishing. This year has seen big changes at the Red House, with the acquisition of an additional 11 acres, about 8 of which are under cultivation. We will be making organic red clover hay in the fall thanks to Josh Bieman of Upper Canada Creamery in Iroquois. The Biemans offer fine yogurt and other products at their on-site store:

Our work to build wildlife-attracting ponds continues; kestrel and barn swallow nesting boxes will be erected shortly. Already we have noticed turtles, at least three kinds of frogs, and a huge increase in ospreys, blue herons and even some American bitterns and other wildlife, though the coyotes are presenting a challenge for our neighbours’ chickens.

Red House Honey can be found selling honey, garden-fresh produce, seeds and soaps on Saturdays at Prescott Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market, by the clock tower in Prescott, Ontario. https://www.facebook.com/brenda.steinburg.7/videos/654960601367806/
