HEIRLOOM Russian Red Kale (Ragged Jack)
Brought to Canada by Russian traders, this heirloom variety was grown pre-1863. Blue-green oak-leaf shaped foliage with red-purple veining & stems. Seed plants grown from organic certified seed.
Can reach 3 feet. Purple colour intensifies after frost, which also improves flavour. Plants may be left outdoors all winter. Directly sow seeds in the garden 2-4 weeks before last frost date or as soon as the ground can be worked spring—or at least 10 weeks before the first frost of the next season. Can be grown in a container. Plant seeds 1/2 inch deep in a good layer of compost in full sun. Matures in 40-60 days. Freezes well; great in salads, steamed or stir-fried.
